What to Do In Maitland, Florida
Everything has a history, no matter how humble or unassuming, and Maitland, Florida is an example of that fact. Of the Central Florida incorporated suburban municipalities, Maitland is one of the oldest.
In 1838 Fort Maitland was built on Lake Funecheliga. Later the lake was renamed Lake Maitland. After the second Seminole the fort was torn down and this picturesque location became a rural area and remained so for the next 30 years.
A post office was built for the local inhabitants and around this single building, which became a gathering spot, a settlement grew and was call Lake Maitland. It was later shortened to just Maitland.
As the city limits of Orland reached Maitland in the 1030’s it developed more rapidly, taking on the characteristics of a modern town. Today, not only does Maitland boast about its century old homes, but also about being a town where affluent people have come to call home.
Maitland, Florida may be a suburb of Orlando but it will never be lost in its shadow.
